A quick overview before we get to the examples: To create a deep winter capsule wardrobe, start by decluttering, download our ready-made checklist, define your color palette, shop your own closet for essentials, and finish with mix-and-match outfit ideas using your essentials. Let’s dive into visuals!
How to Build a Deep Winter Capsule Wardrobe (Visual Collage of 30 Essentials)

Step 1: Declutter First
Start with what you already have.
Pull everything out and get rid of pieces you never wear—regardless of whether the color fits your palette.
Holding onto pieces just because they “should” work makes getting dressed harder, not easier.
You also don’t have to get rid of clothes in your closet that you love just because they’re not in the ideal Deep Winter color palette!
For more support with cleaning out your closet see this blog post.
Step 2: Use Our Done-for-You Checklist
To take the guesswork out of what you need, grab our free Women’s Essentials Capsule Checklist (see directly below).
That’s right, in this step you’re just signing up for the free checklist and getting it printed. Easy! But so key to have direction and make this straight-forward.
Now we can move on to the next step of putting together a perfect Deep Winter Capsule Wardrobe.
Step 3: Establish Your Deep Winter Wardrobe Colour Scheme
Deep winter colors are cool, bold, and high contrast. Think jewel tones like ruby, emerald, sapphire, and classic winter neutrals like navy, charcoal, and black.
You can use the full palette or narrow it down to favorites based on what flatters your cool undertones most.
This will guide your shopping and keep your capsule cohesive.

Step 4: Shop Your Closet for Essentials
Now compare what you have to your checklist.
Even if an item is off-palette, keep it for now if it fits a capsule category.
Of course, you can aim to replace those over time with pieces that align better with the deep winter color palette.
(Reminder: sign up above for our free Women’s Essentials checklist.)
As you shop for missing pieces later, look for your selected categories in deep winter colors. For example, if you’re missing a “print tee,” look for one that includes fuchsia, deep purples, or turquoise.
Step 5: Discover Outfits with Done-for-You Formulas
Once your key pieces are in place, mix and match using outfit formulas.

The cool thing is, all deep winter colors work beautifully together in an outfit. High contrast is your friend!
These combinations take the stress out of decision-making. And they’re built around items you’ll already have from your checklist.
Later in this blog post we’ll give you some examples of a deep winter outfit for fall, winter, spring, and summer.
Examples of 6 Deep Winter Fashion Basics
Did you know regardless of your color season, the actual types of basics we recommend are the same?
What makes it work for Deep Winter is the COLOR.
Download our free checklist to shop your closet first for these basics. (Note that the checklist shows examples that are not necessarily in the deep winter color palette–that’s why we wrote THIS blog post with visual examples of what it would look like for a Deep Winter.)
Then slowly work toward replacing wardrobe basics you have that aren’t in your ideal colors, or adding in new wardrobe essentials that you don’t have yet, in your best colours.
Deep Winter Neutral Tee

Go with strong neutrals like navy, charcoal, or black. These tees ground your look and mix easily with jewel tones.
Deep Winter Striped Tee

A classic striped tee in navy and white or black and white works perfectly for deep winter style. High contrast = flattering.

Deep Winter Print Tee

Look for bold florals or geometrics in vibrant shades like fuchsia, royal, grape, or turquoise.
Yes, this example is technically more like a blouse… but who says you need simple cotton tees? You can always elevate your look with a top that is “a little extra” like this one.
Pair your print tees with a neutral bottom or even bold color pants for more visual interest.
Deep Winter Neutral Jeans

Choose charcoal, black, or dark-wash gray denim. These act as a versatile base for everything in your capsule.
Deep Winter Spring/Summer Color Pants

Bring in color with pants in hot pink, aqua, kelly green, or grape—great for warmer months while staying in palette.
Deep Winter Dark Color Cardigan

Essential for layering in cooler months. Pick deep jewel tones like sapphire, plum, dark green, or burgundy.

Many of the staples work across all seasons and can be styled up or down depending on the occasion.
Often women wonder how to wear their deep winter jewel tones in the spring and summer.
As you can see you are simply wearing some of the medium-toned colors in the spring and summer! So you’d get your color shorts and print dress and color pants for those seasons in colors like fuchsia, grape, cobalt, or kelly green.
Your fall/winter pieces like sweaters, coats, and color pants in some of the slightly deeper winter colors like burgundy, deep purples, berry, etc.
But several deep winter colors work year-round! (Refer back to the color palette graphic earlier in this blog post.)
