Teacher pay doesn’t stretch far. But you still have to show up every morning looking pulled together, in clothes that survive a glue stick, a coffee spill, and six hours on your feet.

That’s a lot to ask of a small budget!

That’s why we’ve compiled ten of our favorite places to shop for clothes, especially for teachers!

From budget-friendly basics to high quality staples (that are worth the splurge), these ten stores are the perfect way to build your wardrobe in and outside the classroom.

They sell pieces that wash well, mix easily, and don’t hurt when you need five of them.

Below you’ll find ten stores worth your time, what each one is good for, and one outfit formula you can build there. There’s a section on teacher discounts too, plus answers to the questions teachers ask most.

As a mom who’s always hunting for cheaper places to buy quality clothing, a lot of these have become my year-round favorites, not just my September ones.

I’ve found gems in second-hand shops and grabbed staples at Old Navy, and both helped me feel confident without wrecking my budget.

Even a few of the pricier picks have earned their keep with pieces I’ve worn for years and still love.

Here’s a helpful tip before we get started: a great teacher wardrobe comes from buying pieces that work together, not from shopping at more places. Our free wardrobe checklist shows you exactly which basics to look for.

How to Get a Teacher Discount at Almost Any Store

Teacher discounts are real, but they move around. A store may offer one in May and nothing in October, or run it in stores but not online.

Here’s how to catch them anyway.

Register once with ID.me and SheerID. Dozens of retailers verify educators through these two services, and it takes about five minutes.

Keep your school ID in your wallet. Some of the best discounts are in-store only and require you to show it at the register.

Ask at checkout. Cashiers won’t offer it, but plenty of stores will honor one if you ask.

Shop Teacher Appreciation Week in May. That’s when the deepest discounts show up, and it’s the best time of year to restock.

Old Navy: Best for Affordable Teacher Clothes That Wash Well

Shop Old Navy HERE!

Neutral Dressy Pants + White Tee + Neutral Cardigan + Slip-On Sneakers

Shop these pieces here!

Old Navy is a teacher’s dream come true!

The basic tees, cardigans, and black dress pants hold up in the washing machine, which matters more than anything else in a classroom.

Sizing runs from petite through extended, and there’s almost always a sale running.

Skip the trendy stuff and buy the boring pieces here.

Please note: We don’t recommend jeans from there since those do tend to stretch out and sag sooner. Also avoid slub-knit tops, since they shrink and lose their shape easily. But other kinds of pants, skirts, jackets, blouses, and dresses are great at Old Navy!

Target: Best for One-Stop School Day Outfits

Shop Target HERE!

Dark Wash Jeans + Neutral Blouse + Neutral Flats + Tote

Shop these pieces here!

Since Target is a go-to place for back-to-school supplies, why not make it your one-stop-shop for clothing too?

A New Day and Universal Thread cover most of what a teacher needs, and the price point makes it easy to try a new silhouette without commitment.

Target is especially good for casual Friday and field trip clothes.

Plus, most locations include a Starbucks cafe or kiosk (and teachers are fueled by coffee, right?)

Amazon: Best for Fast Restocks and Hard-to-Find Sizes

Shop Amazon HERE!

Neutral Maxi Dress + Denim Jacket + Slide Sandals + Sunglasses

Shop these pieces here!

When you need new clothes in a pinch without leaving the house, Amazon is the place to shop!

It’s also the easiest place to find long inseams, tall sizes, and modest lengths that are tricky to track down elsewhere.

Read the reviews for fabric complaints before you buy, since you can’t try it on before purchasing!

TJ Maxx: Best for Higher-End Brands at a Discount

Shop TJMaxx HERE!

Neutral Skirt + Neutral Fitted Sweater + Ankle Boots + Statement Earrings

Shop similar pieces here!

TJMAxx can feel like a hit or miss because they’re consistently rotating their inventory.

You can’t walk in needing a specific black cardigan and expect to find it.

But go with an open mind and a list of gaps in your closet, and you’ll find real brands at outlet prices.

Best for shoes, sweaters, and bags.

Ann Taylor Loft: Best for Parent Conferences and Professional Days

Shop Loft HERE!

Neutral Dressy Pants + White Blouse + Neutral Blazer + Block-Heel Mules + Minimalist Necklace

Shop these pieces here!

When you need to look polished, Loft is the answer.

I have pieces from Loft that have stood the test of time, and I still wear them even after owning them for more than 5 years!

Their trousers and blouses are the backbone of a business casual teacher wardrobe, and they’re also where I’d shop for interview clothes.

Loft has a long-running in-store teacher discount, so ask at the register.

Banana Republic Factory: Best for Basics That Actually Last

Shop Banana Republic HERE!

Wide-Leg Trousers (Neutral Dressy Pants) + Neutral Fitted Sweater + Neutral Blazer + Neutral Flats + Watch

Shop these pieces here!

Banana Republic is another one of those higher-end brands that are worth every penny.

The wide-leg trousers and blazers here cost more than Old Navy but last several times longer, which makes them cheaper per wear.

Buy the pieces you’ll reach for weekly and let the cheaper stores cover the rest.

JCPenney: Best Department Store for Teacher Dresses

Shop JCPenny HERE!

Neutral Print Dress + Light Color Cardigan + Neutral Flats + Pendant Necklace

Shop these pieces here!

A dress is one decision instead of three, which is worth a lot at 6 a.m.

Worthington and Liz Claiborne make simple, machine-washable work dresses in timeless styles, and JCPenney runs sales constantly.

Add a cardigan, and you’ve covered every season.

Kohl’s: Best for Cozy, Machine-Washable Everyday Pieces

Shop Khol’s HERE!

Leggings + Neutral Slouchy Sweater + Tall Boots + Neutral Scarf

Shop these pieces here!

If you’re desperate for a winter outfit that is also teacher-appropriate, Khol’s is the place for you!

Kohl’s is strong on cozy sweaters, comfortable shoes, and extended sizing, and between coupons and Kohl’s Cash you rarely pay full price.

They run seasonal teacher offers rather than a standing one, so watch for them in spring.

Please note: You can also make Amazon returns at Khol’s, so you can kill two birds with one stone!

Quince: Best Splurge for Quality Basics

Neutral Blouse + Light Wash Jeans + Neutral Flats + Tote

Shop Quince HERE!

Shop these pieces here!

Worth the splurge on two or three pieces.

Quince sells washable silk, cashmere, and breathable fabrics at a fraction of designer pricing, and these are the pieces you’ll still be wearing in five years.

Buy here for the items you wear most, not for trends.

Thrift and Consignment Stores: Best for Building a Teacher Wardrobe on a Budget

Print Skirt + Neutral Tee + Denim Jacket + Slip-On Sneakers + Minimalist Earrings

Shop our favorite online thrift stores HERE!

Cheapest option on this list by a wide margin.

Go with a list, check the fabric content tags, and shop the neighborhoods where the clothes you want get donated.

You can also check out some secondhand websites like Poshmark or ThredUp (you get to thrift at home, how awesome is that!).

I’ve found some of my favorite pieces this way, and secondhand is where a small budget goes furthest.

If you are buying secondhand online, I recommend shopping for brands that you know your sizing in, that way you don’t have to guess on sizing! You can also look for things like shoes, bags, and jackets that are more forgiving in sizing.

Your Teacher Clothes Shopping Questions, Answered

What stores do teachers like?

Teachers gravitate toward Old Navy, Target, Loft, Kohl’s, and Amazon. These stores balance price, machine-washable fabrics, and professional styles that work for a school day.

The common thread is durability. A teacher’s clothes get sat on the floor in, leaned against whiteboards, and washed constantly, so fabric that holds its shape matters more than the label.

Where can teachers find affordable clothes?

Thrift stores, Old Navy, Target, and TJ Maxx offer the lowest prices on teacher-appropriate clothes. Outlet stores like Banana Republic Factory land in the middle, with better fabric at a discount.

Shopping off-season helps too. Buy cardigans in March and sundresses in September.

What is the best outfit for a teacher?

The best teacher outfit is comfortable, modest, and made of fabric you can wash. A common formula is dark wash jeans or dress pants, a simple top, a cardigan or blazer, and comfortable flats.

Layers matter most. Classrooms swing from freezing to stuffy, so a cardigan you can add or drop makes any outfit work all day. You can see more looks in our post on chic teacher outfits.

Where to shop for teacher outfits?

Start with one affordable store for basics like Old Navy or Target, then add one nicer store like Loft for the polished pieces you wear to conferences.

Two stores is usually enough. Shopping at ten places is how closets get full of clothes that don’t match.

How can teachers dress on a budget?

Buy fewer pieces in neutral colors that mix with each other. Ten pieces that all coordinate make far more outfits than thirty that don’t.

Stick to neutral colors for your bigger items and save the prints for tops and scarves. Then register for teacher discounts, shop off-season, and check thrift stores first.

Shopping is the easy part. Knowing what to buy, and what to do with it once it’s hanging in your closet, is where most of us get stuck.
