For whatever reason, shoes in the winter and fall seem easier than summer shoes. In the spring and summer we just want shoes that are comfortable and lightweight. But while sandals are cool they are not always comfortable and they are not always supportive.
Maybe you want a tennis shoes to go camping in. Or maybe you want a slip-on to travel Europe in (if this is you, I’m completely jealous). Or maybe you need a sandal to take you from hitting the park with the kids to coffee with a girlfriend. Or maybe you’re like me and chase kids around a farm or run down to the corn field to find your husband and need something that washes easily and doesn’t fall off when trying to push the clutch in on the tractor (No? Just me? Ok, fair enough).
Well, whatever the cause is, the need is the same. We need comfortable, cute, everyday shoes to take us through all our summer adventures, whether running, chasing or driving.
So here are our favorite travel and walking shoes, with recommendations included by members of our Facebook group Frump Fighters!
Bonus: All styles are available on Amazon!
Comfortable Sneakers & Cute Slip-Ons
One key to making both of these styles work is no-show socks. Socks keep your feet from sweating inside your shoes too much and often add to the comfort factor.
The best no-show socks don’t come up to your ankle on the top of your foot, but just cover your toes, and have silicone at the heel to keep them from slipping. If the silicone starts to bother your heel, you can flip the sock inside out and place the silicone at your toes or just get some without silicone.
Amazon has tons of great options, but even places like Costco tend to carry them during the warmer months.
Sneakers are usually your typical lace-up tennis shoe. These work great for sportier outfits or times when you are doing more intense outdoor activities like hiking or an entire day of walking.
Cross Trainers are specifically made for many different athletic activities. These Nike Cross Trainers have dual-density foam insoles and have a mesh outer for great breathability! I love the color options for this style. Lots of neutrals to choose from, including lots with a small pop of color (instead of your whole shoe looking like a neon sign). 😉
These Aetrix sneakers have memory foam insoles and are also super breathable thanks to mesh on the outside and top. These look super lightweight and comfy!
I truly love a good pair of Nike tennis shoes. I try to always have one good pair of sneakers to wear walking, jogging or for other more intense activities and Nikes are my favorite. My current pair are black and I love that they go with all my athletic wear. These particular Pegasus runners have a special cushioned insole especially good for runners!
I love the look of these new balance sneakers! Grey blends well with a lot of different colors and is very versatile. If you aren’t doing lots of intense work out or hiking these would be a great option for a tennis shoe.
Slip-on shoes are the perfect “in between” shoe! Close toed, keep your feet a little warmer and safer (and cleaner!), but aren’t super sporty and go with a wide variety of outfits. I love a good pair of slip-ons to go with anything from ankle pants to shorts to casual dresses.
Admittedly, I’m showing you this pair first because they are my FAVORITE slip-on shoe. I have both khaki and black and the first day I put these on I “accidentally” wore them for over 8 hours. I hardly realized I even had shoes on, let alone new shoes. That’s how comfortable they are!
These have a flexible orthotic insert with lots of cushion and mesh outer. I have a pair of slip-ons similar to this (also in grey) and get lots of use out of them!
Memory foam insoles, extra padding, classic lines, what more could you ask for? How about more than 30 color and design options! I’m seriously swooning over a few of the prints!
These are a sporty mary-jane style with super breathable lining and cushioning. Leather outer provides durability too. I bet these would be super cute with casual dresses and skirts!
Stylish & Supportive Sandals
Flip flops are definitely what I grab automatically on warm, sunny days. But I usually make the mistake of having cheap flip flops that provide no support and not much comfort! So let me help you (and myself) with all these options for comfy, stylish sandals.
I have heard so many fantastic reviews of these Yoga flip flops from Sanuk. I have a friend who wore these at Disneyland day after day and didn’t have sore feet! Say what?! They are also machine washable! Sound like a mama’s dream sandal!
These may look simple, but they are packed with foot-friendly goodness. Designed by a podiatrist, these Vionic’s have an orthotic sole specifically made to help support your heel (plantar fasciitis) and realign your spine to it’s natural position. These were one of the most highly recommended brands in our Frump Fighter‘s group!
After trying my Crocs slip-ons and loving them so much I am definitely tempted to try these sandals! Made out of Croslite they are super light weight with a molded footbed. I love the sleek look!
These FitFlops have a 3 layered footbed made to absorb impact and diffuse foot pressure. I love the sporty look of these!
I know, I know, your mind just stopped and you’re trying to wrap your head around why Birkenstocks made it on the “not frumpy” shoe list. Aren’t we well removed from the 90s?! Well, my friends, even if you don’t like the original Birkenstocks style, isn’t this style cute? Whatever your opinion of the new and improved Birkenstocks, they are probably one of the comfiest sandals out there. The shape of the footbed allows weight to be evenly distributed across your foot (hello, happy back!) and they completely mold to your feet as you wear them in. They are made in Germany high quality leather and cork and the buckle means you can adjust the strap to your liking. Convinced yet? 😉
Deciding on the Best Comfortable Shoe for YOU
And there you have it! How will you ever choose with so many awesome options? Shoes are definitely one area of my closet I struggle with keeping it minimal, but I am definitely in the market for a good sandal.
Remember that it’s the little things that often make your outfit pop. The right belt, the right necklace, the right shoes… each of these can make that bit of difference and change how you feel about your clothing choices that day. Adding a quality slip-on or sandal to your closet will help you feel better, not just because they are stylish, but also because they are good for your feet!
