Step by Step: How to Make a Shirt or Dress Tighter Using the Coin Trick

You will need:

  • a clear elastic
  • a coin (quarters work the best but you may use any size.)

Use this easy trick to cinch a shirt at the waist or make a flowy dress tighter at the top or in the back.

How to Create a Gather to Cinch Your Shirts or Dresses (Placing Coin on the Outside)

  1. Hold the coin against the outside of your top or dress. 
  2. With your other hand, open the elastic with your fingers.
  3. Reach under your top or dress, grab the coin with your elastic (over fabric).
  4. Tie it twice or three times so that it’s tight enough to stay. If desired, repeat with one or two more coins to create additional ruches beside it.

How to Create a Button to Add Definition & Character to Your Shirts or Dresses (Placing Coin on the Outside)

  1. Hold the coin against the inside of your top or dress. 
  2. With your other hand, open the elastic with your fingers.
  3. Grab the coin from the outside with your elastic (over fabric) and tie the elastic twice or three times so that it’s tight enough to stay.
  4. If desired, repeat with one or two more coins to create additional “buttons” beside it.
