You might not have been specifically researching 2020/2021 fashion trends today.
But here on the Frump Fighters blog (written specifically for moms!) we make it our goal to help you wade through the fashion world and easily find the bright, exciting new things that can help you step up your wardrobe.
While we do try to focus on classic styles that can carry you through many years without looking dated, an easy way to avoid “frumpy” is by incorporating seasonal trends into your closet.
It helps freshen and update your look–eliminating the risk of “falling behind” or looking “dated.” Nobody wants that!
Figuring out what casual and chic trends are in style each season (that are also kid-friendly) can be time consuming.
Instead, using our list of mom-friendly trends for each season you can feel 100% informed and find exactly what you need (or decide to avoid) in a grab-and-go trip at Target.
We’re here to make it easy for you to feel confident about what you wear, what you buy, and what you don’t buy.
As you learn what’s “in style” your confidence while shopping and dressing will skyrocket.
These 20 current trends made the cut, and there are others that we chose NOT to include either because they were 1) expensive, 2) not modest/classy, 3) not conducive to mom life!
How to Use Fashion Trends In Your Mom Wardrobe
Quick reminders before we dive in…
Tip #1: Be picky with your trends
Only try out the ones you really love. Don’t just buy something because all the other moms are wearing it.
Does it fit your style? Does it make your heart go THOMP THOMP? 💕
Also, can pick trends that can be added to your wardrobe on a budget.
For example, recently embroidered jeans were the hot new trend. This would have been a pricier trend to add because jeans aren’t cheap! Also, the trend died off pretty quickly leaving lots of people with a pair of jeans that don’t feel very relevant anymore.
Instead, adding an embroidered scarf or skipping the trend altogether may be a better use of your money.
Don’t forget to grab this freebie that covers several ways you can incorporate trends for free or for cheap.
Tip #2: Keep in mind that trends aren’t immune to frumpy monster attacks 😉
Just because something is super popular doesn’t automatically make it chic and stylish.
Make sure you follow the basic rules for not looking frumpy when you try a new trend. Those rules apply to any new style that comes around!
Tip #3: Build up your foundation of essentials before adding trends
If you feel like you don’t have any basic outfits to start with, buying trends will only frustrate you. Make sure you have those basics first that will form the foundation of every good outfit.
- good fitting white tee
- denim shorts
- simple, neutral day dress
When you have a good foundation, adding a trend or two to your style becomes fun and adds value to your wardrobe!

Tip #4: Treat trends like sprinkles on a cupcake, not like the batter
As Corina teaches in the Frumpy to Fabulous course about creating your customized wardrobe framework, your wardrobe should be mostly (70-80%) classic essentials.
Although some of your essentials may have a trendy feel to them, they are still basics that will look good for years.
Trends can be added to your wardrobe like sprinkles to a frosted cupcake to add that extra fun look!
This avoids your wardrobe from looking dated every few years but also keeps it fresh and on-trend.
With those tips in mind… here’s our Fall/Winter 2020-2021 edition of “Fashion Trends That Are Mom Friendly.”

2020-2021 Fashion Trends: Colors, Patterns, and Textures
Fashion Trend #1: Faux Fur
This trend screams soft, cozy and the ultimate cold weather texture.
Faux fur and sherpa fabrics are out in full force this year and you can find them not only in your typical cozy jackets or sweaters, but also lining your shoes and purses.
Fashion Trend #2: Waffle & Rib Knit
The texture of waffle knits and rib knits can take the most basic color or style and kick them up a notch.
We’re seeing this trend a lot this fall and winter, especially in tees with knots or twists at the hem.
Fashion Trend #3: Camo
Camo may sound a little backwoods to you, but it’s a casual print that you can pattern mix with (just like the ever popular leopard prints).
From jeans to joggers to sweatshirts you can find many styles in this print right now.
Fashion Trend #4: Tie Dye
This was a very popular print this spring and summer, but it’s still holding on as the weather cools.
A lot of tie dye right now is in single colors mixed with white stripes, which makes it a very easy trend to incorporate into your wardrobe.
Fashion Trend #5: Plaid
A closet staple for fall and winter, plaid is popular in many versions, from basic buffalo plaids to bright tartans.
I’ll even throw in a mention for houndstooth, which reads similar to plaid and I’ve seen it in pants, skirts, and blazers!

Fashion Trend #6: Gathers
This is a lovely 2020/2021 fashion trend, although I had a hard time naming it!
Lots of feminine blouse-y styles, many with a puffed sleeve.
I’ve seen everything from basic tops to dresses with gathered tiers. So pretty!
Fashion Trend #7: Joggers
This is probably one of the most oft-debated trends in our Frump Fighters Facebook group.
Even though we’ve talked about joggers multiple times over the past few years, we are seeing a lot of joggers this fall and winter.
The perk to this is that you can find joggers in almost any fabric and fit, which means you should be able to find the perfect pair of joggers for your lifestyle!
If you are curious about the many ways you can style joggers, check out our blog post with tons of outfit examples from every-day moms!
Fashion Trend #8: Long Cardigans
Long cardigans (hip length or longer) are trending this year, but in two different ways.
Either long cardigans with a loose fit and/or chunky knit or long cardigans with a fitted, finer knit.
Horizontal stripes or leopard are popular prints, but you can also find almost any solid color.
Don’t underestimate some good cardigans, they are some of the easiest ways to change up an outfit and work perfectly while you are pregnant too!
Fashion Trend #9: Graphic Tees
Easy and effortlessly casual, graphic tees are a must if you are a busy mom!
There are so many options and styles out there, you are far more likely to have too many of these than not.
Fashion Trend #10: Athleisure
Another perfect trend for busy, on-the-go moms is athleisure.
We’ve talked about this trend before in previous seasons, and athleisure is still going strong, even stronger maybe!
There are so many awesome styles and fits of pullovers, sweatshirts, and leggings you can surely find something that fits your style.
Fashion Trend #11: Wide Leg Pants
We saw wide leg pants gaining some popularity last fall, and we can definitely say without a doubt that they are a full on trend this year.
Paired with fitted tops, wide leg pants can give an beautiful silhouette.
Fashion Trend #12: High Rise Pants
With the perk of holding in your mid-section, high rise pants are definitely continuing to trend in jeans and pants.
No matter your price range or whether you want casual or dressy you can find high rise pants everywhere!
Fashion Trend #13: Midi Length Dresses & Skirts
I especially love this length on taller ladies, but even if you aren’t tall or just want a more modest length this fall and winter, you won’t have to go searching too far.
Midi-length dresses and skirts, especially in knit fabrics can be found in many stores this season!
It can be tricky to pair shoes with midi skirts without feeling frumpy. Here is our guide to how to wear skirts and what shoes to wear with different lengths.
2020-2021 Fashion Trends: Shoes & Accessories
Fashion Trend #14: Suede Shoes
Suede is a beautiful material that has taken over shoes (and even purses!) this fall.
I love the softness that suede gives to an outfit, so definitely be on the lookout for some fun suede booties or heels this season!
Fashion Trend #15: Mules & Loafers
Easy, slip on styles that you can find in neutrals and colors.
If you are looking to update your slides or flats this is a perfect style to go with!
Fashion Trend #16: Crossbody Bags
You can’t get any more mom-friendly than this trend for purses and bags.
Throw it across your body and it does fall off your shoulder or slide down your arm. Nothing more needs to be said!
Fashion Trends that Are Still Going Strong from Previous Years
This section is for trends we’ve talked about over the last year (or two!) that are still popular this season.
I love seeing this section grow, because that means we are picking the right trends; ones that last a while and aren’t “SO yesterday”.😉
Fashion Trend #17: Leopard Print
Even if animal prints aren’t your style (which is fine!), you won’t get away from the fact that leopard is ALL IN.
We’ve seen this numerous years in a row now and it’s not a fading trend!
In a small scale, animal print can be a great way to add some interest to basic, classy styles.
Leopard is probably my favorite print and I have numerous pieces of clothing and accessories in many styles because I love it so much! So in my opinion, you can’t go wrong! In moderation, of course. 😉
The 3rd Edition Year-Round Outfit Guide uses a dark printed scarf as one of the accessories and leopard is a great option!
Fashion Trend #18: Scrunchies, Clips, & Headbands
We talked about scrunchies earlier last year in the spring and summer trends post and I wasn’t so sure I wanted to try them.
Well, gulp, I tried them. And they are AMAZING. They are so careful and gentle on your hair!
Snap clips and wide headbands are also becoming super popular and are fun ways to add a simple pop of color to your hair.
This is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to add a trend to your wardrobe!
Fashion Trend #19: Earth Tones
If you are a warm color season, prepare to rejoice!
Earth tones are definitely showing up every where this year, in pretty much every style of clothing.
It’s always nice to see a basic neutral trending!

Fashion Trend #20: Structured Bags & Purses
Structured purses and totes have a modern look to them and are usually simple, bold shapes in a solid color.
A lot of them are cross-body style and backpack style, which are (in my opinion) the epitome of mom-friendly.
Baby in one hand, toddler in another and you’re not losing your purse off your shoulder. WIN!
That rounds up our mom-friendly choices for fall and winter 2020-2021 fashion trends.
Like I mentioned before, take note of the ones you love and look for those details/styles when you’re shopping.
You can be confident that when you incorporate some of these looks into your fall/winter wardrobe, you will be looking relevant, stylish, and super cute!
