You probably weren’t specifically researching fall & winter 2021/2022 fashion trends today.
But here on the Frump Fighters blog (written specifically for moms!) we make it our goal to help you wade through the fashion world and easily find the bright, exciting new things that can help you step up your wardrobe.
While we do try to focus on classic styles that can carry you through many years without looking dated, an easy way to avoid “frumpy” is by incorporating seasonal trends into your closet.
It helps freshen and update your look–eliminating the risk of “falling behind” or looking “dated.” Nobody wants that!
Figuring out what casual and chic trends are in style each season (that are also kid-friendly) can be time consuming.
Instead, using our list of mom-friendly trends for each season you can feel 100% informed and find exactly what you need (or decide to avoid) in a grab-and-go trip at Target.
We’re here to make it easy for you to feel confident about what you wear, what you buy, and what you don’t buy.
As you learn what’s “in style” your confidence while shopping and dressing will skyrocket.
These 23 current trends made the cut, and there are others that we chose NOT to include either because they were 1) expensive, 2) not modest/classy, 3) not conducive to mom life!
How to Use Fashion Trends In Your Mom Wardrobe
Quick reminders before we dive in…
Tip #1: Be picky with your trends
Only try out the ones you really love. Don’t just buy something because all the other moms are wearing it.
Does it fit your style? Does it make your heart go THOMP THOMP?😍
Also, can pick trends that can be added to your wardrobe on a budget.
For example, recently embroidered jeans were the hot new trend. This would have been a pricier trend to add because jeans aren’t cheap! Also, the trend died off pretty quickly leaving lots of people with a pair of jeans that don’t feel very relevant anymore.
Instead, adding an embroidered scarf or skipping the trend altogether may be a better use of your money.
Don’t forget to grab this freebie that covers several ways you can incorporate trends for free or for cheap.
Tip #2: Keep in mind that trends aren’t immune to frumpy monster attacks
Just because something is super popular doesn’t automatically make it chic and stylish.
Make sure you follow the basic rules for not looking frumpy when you try a new trend. Those rules apply to any new style that comes around!
Tip #3: Build up your foundation of essentials before adding trends
If you feel like you don’t have any basic outfits to start with, buying trends will only frustrate you. Make sure you have those basics first that will form the foundation of every good outfit.
- good fitting white tee
- denim shorts
- simple, neutral day dress
When you have a good foundation, adding a trend or two to your style becomes fun and adds value to your wardrobe!

Tip #4: Treat trends like sprinkles on a cupcake, not like the batter
As Corina teaches in the Frumpy to Fabulous course about creating your customized wardrobe framework, your wardrobe should be mostly (70-80%) classic essentials.
Although some of your essentials may have a trendy feel to them, they are still basics that will look good for years.
Trends can be added to your wardrobe like sprinkles to a frosted cupcake to add that extra fun look!
This avoids your wardrobe from looking dated every few years but also keeps it fresh and on-trend.
With those tips in mind… here’s our Fall/Winter 2021-2022 edition of “Fashion Trends That Are Mom Friendly.”

Fall & Winter 2021/2022 Fashion Trends:
COLORS, PATTERNS & TEXTURES
Fashion Trend #1: Faux Fur
This trend screams soft, cozy and the ultimate cold weather texture.
Faux fur and sherpa fabrics are out in full force this year and you can find them not only in your typical cozy jackets or sweaters, but also lining your shoes and purses.
Fashion Trend #2: Leopard
Even if animal prints aren’t your style (which is fine!), you won’t get away from the fact that leopard (and even snakeskin and zebra print) is ALL IN.
We’ve seen this numerous years in a row now and it’s not a fading trend!
In a small scale, animal print can be a great way to add some interest to basic, classy styles.
Leopard is probably my favorite print and I have numerous pieces of clothing and accessories in many styles because I love it so much! So in my opinion, you can’t go wrong! In moderation, of course.😉
The 3rd Edition Year-Round Outfit Guide uses a dark printed scarf as one of the accessories and leopard is a great option!
Fashion Trend #3: Camo
Camo may sound a little backwoods to you, but it’s a casual print that you can easily pattern mix with (just like the ever popular leopard prints).
From jeans to joggers to sweatshirts you can find many styles in different colorways of camo right now.
Fashion Trend #4: Earth Tones
Prepare to rejoice!
Earth tones are definitely showing up everywhere this year, in pretty much every style of clothing.
From almost all shades of grey, tan, brown, and taupe, it’s always nice to see a basic neutral trending!
Fashion Trend #5: Corduroy
I love a good texture and this one does not disappoint.
You may feel like corduroy was more popular a couple decades ago, but in true “come-back” form we are seeing an up-tick in this textured fabric in the last couple of years.
An easy way to incorporate this trend in a small chunk would be a headband or hat!

Fashion Trend #6: Saturated Colors
Color saturation refers to the intensity of color. A highly saturated color is vivid, rich and bright, while a color with a low saturation will veer towards a scale of grey.
Generally speaking, the past few years we have seen a lot of dusty colors with more of a grey base, but this year we are seeing colors that are much more saturated and vivid. This is great news if you are a deep or clear color season.
As a deep winter, I am STOKED by this, but my wallet is not.😂
Fashion Trend #7: Puffer & Quilted
Puffer jackets or vests have been popular staples for a while now, but quilted textures are showing up even more this season – look for bags, purses, and even shoes!
Fashion Trend #8: Rust
I can almost say that this is by far the MOST trending color this season.
This spring we saw a lot of coral, from very light to medium shades and now that fall is upon us, it seems like that has morphed into it’s darker color cousin, rust.
TIP: We noticed that the rust can vary in how orange or red it is, so if you know your color season and are wanting to incorporate this trend, pay attention to which shade you are looking for.
Fashion Trend #9: Ditsy Florals
I don’t think floral has ever left our trends updates! It’s always back in one form or other.
Right now we’re seeing a lot of small ditsy florals – in almost any type of piece!

SPECIFIC STYLE TOPS, DRESSES & PANTS
Fashion Trend #10: Athleisure
Another perfect trend for busy, on-the-go moms is athleisure.
Whether you are sporty by nature or just love comfort and ease, you will adore all the athleisure options you’ll see in stores right now.
We’ve talked about this trend before in previous seasons, and athleisure is still going strong, even stronger maybe!
There are so many awesome styles and fits of pullovers, sweatshirts, and leggings you can surely find something that fits your style.
Fashion Trend #11: Graphic Tees
Support your favorite cause, TV show or shout your #boymom or #bestwife status by getting a graphic tee. You can dress them up or down, pair with your favorite skinny jeans or even a skirt!
Graphic tees are such an easy way to infuse your basic capsule pieces with personality and style – there’s an option out there for everyone!
Fashion Trend #12: High Waisted Bottoms
With the perk of holding in your mid-section, high rise pants & jeans are definitely a continuing trend.
No matter your price range or whether you want casual or dressy you can find high rise pants everywhere!
Fashion Trend #13: Midi Length Dresses & Skirts
I especially love this length on taller ladies, but even if you aren’t tall or just want a more modest length this fall and winter, you won’t have to go searching too far.
Midi-length dresses and skirts (especially with tiers or ruffles – see trend #17 below!) can be found in many stores this season!
TIP: It can be tricky to pair shoes with midi skirts without feeling frumpy. Here is our guide to how to wear skirts and what shoes to wear with different lengths.
Fashion Trend #14: Rompers, Overalls & Jumpsuits
This style can be both mom-friendly and inconvenient at the same time.
It’s easy and comfy… WIN.
It’s not easy to use the restroom with… LOSE.
It can be nursing friendly though if you go with overalls or with a button-down style.
What are your thoughts on this trend?
Fashion Trend #15: 90s Revival
I know, I know, this one feels SO WEIRD, but after going to our county’s fair last month and people watching and now seeing what’s out in stores, I feel supremely confident including this trend on our list.
We actually talked about 90s trends in a post last year, How to Wear 90s Comeback Trends without Looking Dated.
If you want tips on incorporating “come-back” trends in your wardrobe, this post has all the best tips for how to do that!
Fashion Trend #16: High Necklines
This goes for everything from crew neck to mock neck to turtleneck and even cowl necks!
Depending on your neckline preference you can easily add this trend to your closet this fall and winter!
Fashion Trend #17: Tiers & Ruffles
We’ve talked about this one in previous years, and it’s still going strong! Lots of dresses, tops, and skirts have tiers or wide ruffles.
I love how feminine (and often forgiving!) this style can be!
TIP: Make sure you are following the rule of a looser item of clothing paired with a slimmer piece. I.e. your ruffled top paired with a pair of skinny jeans or your tiered dress paired with a fitted denim or moto jacket.
Fashion Trend #18: Shirt Jackets (Shackets)
While we are seeing a lot of button-down style tops as well, this shirt jacket is definitely the most popular.
It’s literally exactly how it sounds. A button-down shirt that’s often a little thicker and looser so it works as a jacket.
This is a great layering piece going into fall and would also be great completer piece for those warmer climates where you really don’t need a true jacket during the cooler months of the year!
TIP: Like our tip re: ruffles above, make sure you pair this with a slimmer fitting top and bottoms. Otherwise this oversize look starts to veer towards sloppy and frumpy!🙅♀️
Fall & Winter 2021/2022 Fashion Trends:
SHOES & ACCESSORIES
Fashion Trend #19: Felt Hats
In the last year or so I’ve really fallen in love with a good baseball cap.
My hair is long and I tire of ponytails quickly, so hats allow me to keep my hair down and not have to stress too much with how perfect the top of my hair looks.
This being the case, I am very tempted to get a felt hat in a good neutral to “dress up” my hat game!
There are floppy hats and fedora style hats in great number in stores this fall!

Fashion Trend #20: Loafers & Mules
Easy, slip-on styles that you can find in neutrals and colors and in fabrics ranging from corduroy to leather to suede.
If you are looking to update your slides or flats this is a perfect style to go with!
Fashion Trend #21: Low Profile Sneakers
These sneakers are less athletic looking than your typical tennis shoe, usually slimmer and not clunky in any way (although platform soles are definitely popular).
They can go with anything from leggings or skinny jeans to dresses or skirts!
This is a great way to wear comfy, supportive shoes that are completely on trend!
Fashion Trend #22: Chelsea Boots
Chelsea boots are, by description, high ankle boots with elastic on the sides for slipping them on and off.
You will see this style of boot with platform soles (90s come-back trend) or regular soles, and in lots of colors and toe shapes (square, pointy, round, etc).
You will also find styles that are super casual like rainboots all the way up to dressy patent leather!
Fashion Trend #23: Clips, Scrunchies & Headbands
We talked about scrunchies last year in the spring and summer trends post and I wasn’t so sure I wanted to try them.
Well, gulp, I tried them. And they are AMAZING. They are so careful and gentle on your hair!
Snap clips and wide headbands are also becoming super popular and are fun ways to add a simple pop of color to your hair.
This is one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to add a trend to your wardrobe!
If you want to dive into hair trends further we now have an entire post dedicated to easy hair trends for moms, including cuts, colors, hairstyles, and accessories!
