NEW & IMPROVED! We’ve improved the loading time of the page and put all the trend examples on easy-to-pin graphics for you! Enjoy!
You probably weren’t specifically researching fall & winter 2022/2023 fashion trends today.
But here on the Frump Fighters blog (written specifically for moms!) we make it our goal to help you wade through the fashion world and easily find the bright, exciting new things that can help you step up your wardrobe.
While we do try to focus on classic styles that can carry you through many years without looking dated, an easy way to avoid “frumpy” is by incorporating seasonal trends into your closet.
It helps freshen and update your look–eliminating the risk of “falling behind” or looking “dated.” Nobody wants that!
Figuring out what casual and chic trends are in style each season (that are also kid-friendly) can be time consuming.
Instead, using our list of mom-friendly trends for each season you can feel 100% informed and find exactly what you need (or decide to avoid) in a grab-and-go trip at Target.
We’re here to make it easy for you to feel confident about what you wear, what you buy, and what you don’t buy.
As you learn what’s “in style” your confidence while shopping and dressing will skyrocket.
These 23 current trends made the cut, and there are others that we chose NOT to include either because they were 1) expensive, 2) not modest/classy, 3) not conducive to mom life!
How to Use Fashion Trends In Your Mom Wardrobe
Quick reminders before we dive in…
Tip #1: Be picky with your trends
Only try out the ones you really love. Don’t just buy something because all the other moms are wearing it.
Does it fit your style? Does it make your heart go THOMP THOMP?😍
Also, can pick trends that can be added to your wardrobe on a budget.
For example, recently embroidered jeans were the hot new trend. This would have been a pricier trend to add because jeans aren’t cheap! Also, the trend died off pretty quickly leaving lots of people with a pair of jeans that don’t feel very relevant anymore.
Instead, adding an embroidered scarf or skipping the trend altogether may be a better use of your money.
Don’t forget to grab this freebie that covers several ways you can incorporate trends for free or for cheap.
Tip #2: Keep in mind that trends aren’t immune to frumpy monster attacks
Just because something is super popular doesn’t automatically make it chic and stylish.
Make sure you follow the basic rules for not looking frumpy when you try a new trend. Those rules apply to any new style that comes around!
Tip #3: Build up your foundation of essentials before adding trends
If you feel like you don’t have any basic outfits to start with, buying trends will only frustrate you. Make sure you have those basics first that will form the foundation of every good outfit.
Examples are:
- good fitting white tee
- jeans
- denim shorts
- simple, neutral day dress
When you have a good foundation, adding a trend or two to your style becomes fun and adds value to your wardrobe!
Download our free year-round wardrobe plan below for a complete list of basics!
Tip #4: Treat trends like sprinkles on a cupcake, not like the batter
As Corina teaches in the Frumpy to Fabulous course about creating your customized wardrobe framework, your wardrobe should be mostly (70-80%) classic essentials.
Although some of your essentials may have a trendy feel to them, they are still basics that will look good for years.
Trends can be added to your wardrobe like sprinkles to a frosted cupcake to add that extra fun look!
This avoids your wardrobe from looking dated every few years but also keeps it fresh and on-trend.
With those tips in mind… here’s our Fall/Winter 2022-2023 edition of “Fashion Trends That Are Mom Friendly.”

Fall & Winter 2022/2023 Fashion Trends:
COLORS, PATTERNS & TEXTURES
Fashion Trend #1: All Shades of Pinks
>This is my favorite trend. Everything pink is my favorite so maybe I am biased though.😂
Many shades of pink are out there, but I am seeing a lot of warmer tones like mauves and burgundies (opposite of this spring!).
There are two gorgeous pinks on Pantone’s 2022/2023 fall & winter color trends list. If you want to see a full report, go check it out!

Fashion Trend #2: Leopard
There tends to be a little love/hate with this print, but we’ve seen it trending for quite a few years now! It seems to be a little less this year than previous seasons, but nevertheless it’s still going strong!
On a small scale, animal print can be a great way to add some interest to basic, classy styles.
Our 4th Edition of the Women’s Essentials Style Guide uses a dark printed scarf as one of the accessories and leopard is a great option! Same goes for print flats!

Fashion Trend #3: Ditsy Florals
I don’t think floral has ever left our trends updates! It’s always back in one form or another.
In the past few seasons florals have tended to be on a smaller scale (ditsy florals!). You can find them in almost any type of piece!

Fashion Trend #5: Rib Knit
Rib knit is exactly that. A soft knit fabric that has “ribs” or raised vertical stripes within the fabric texture.
Lots of basic tops, tees and dresses can be found in this fabric. They make a great base piece while the ribs add some texture!

Fashion Trend #6: Rust
For the second fall/winter season in a row, I can almost say that this is by far THE most trending color.
We noticed that the rust can vary in how orange or red it is, so if you know your color season and are wanting to incorporate this trend, pay attention to which shade you are looking for.

SPECIFIC STYLE TOPS, DRESSES & PANTS
Fashion Trend #7: Button-Up Shirts
A basic button-down is always in style – it’s a classic piece!
The current trending twist on this style is oversize, loose-fitting button-downs. Partially tuck a button-down into your jeans and you’ll instantly add a touch of classic chic to your outfit!

Fashion Trend #8: Base Layers
What I mean by base layers is this: snug fitting layers like bodysuits and tees that are often layered with loose completer pieces like button-downs or shackets.
This means it’s a great time to build up your basic tees!

If you are like me, you might be a little on the fence about this trend. But if you check your favorite store, chances are you won’t be able to get away from turtleneck or mock neck styles.
Bonus is that if you live in a cold climate you can’t really go wrong with the extra coverage!

Fashion Trend #10: Athleisure
Another perfect trend for busy, on-the-go moms is athleisure.
Whether you are sporty by nature or just love comfort and ease, you will adore all the athleisure options you’ll see in stores right now.
This trend has been strong the last few years and is continuing!
There are so many awesome styles and fits of pullovers, sweatshirts, and leggings you can surely find something that fits your style.
A very popular version of this trend is matching sets. Like tops and bottoms that are the same fabric and when worn together they almost look like a romper or jumpsuit.

Fashion Trend #12: High Waisted Bottoms
With the perk of holding in your mid-section, high rise pants & jeans are definitely a continuing trend.
Paper bag style waists with their wide ties are popular for pants or crops, elastic waisted skirts, button-front jeans, etc. The options are nearly endless!
- High-Waisted O.G. Straight Corduroy Ankle Pants for Women

Fashion Trend #13: Midi Length Dresses & Skirts
I especially love this length on taller ladies, but even if you aren’t tall or just want a more modest length this fall and winter, you won’t have to go searching too far.
Midi-length dresses and skirts (especially with tiers or ruffles – see trend #16 below!) can be found in many stores this season!
TIP: It can be tricky to pair shoes with midi skirts without feeling frumpy. Here is our guide to how to wear skirts and what shoes to wear with different lengths.

Fashion Trend #15: Puff Sleeves
Don’t let me lose you here, because here’s a truth you’re going to have to face: Puff sleeves are IN. SO IN. You won’t be getting away from them.
You can, of course, skip adding them to your wardrobe if you don’t like them.
If you do like them, they are a pretty, feminine touch to tops and dresses!
Keep in mind: These tops/dresses are a bit less versatile for use in fall and winter because cardigans often look lumpy over puffed sleeves. However, a thicker cardigan or a jacket like denim jacket or moto jacket are still great options for layering in the colder months so you can style these pieces year-round.
- PRETTYGARDEN Women’s Floral Print Smocked Babydoll Blouse
- Verdusa Women’s Casual Puff Sleeve Top
- Womens Puff Sleeve Long Sleeve Shirt
- Waist-Defined Puff-Sleeve Smocked Midi Dress for Women
- The Drop Women’s Vivienne Padded-Shoulder Balloon-Sleeve Crew-Neck Sweater
Fashion Trend #16: Tiers & Ruffles
We’ve talked about this one in previous years, and it’s still going strong! Lots of dresses, tops, and skirts have tiers or wide ruffles.
I love how feminine (and often forgiving!) this style can be!
TIP: Make sure you are following the rule of a looser item of clothing paired with a slimmer piece. I.e. your ruffled top paired with a pair of skinny jeans or your tiered dress paired with a fitted denim or moto jacket.
- Puff-Sleeve Floral Tiered Swing Blouse for Women
- Puff-Sleeve Tiered Embroidered Mini Swing Dress for Women
- Women’s Flutter Short Sleeve A-Line Dress – Knox Rose
- Waist-Defined Flutter-Sleeve Floral-Print Smocked Midi Dress for Women
- Women’s Short Sleeve Henley Dress – Knox Rose
- EXLURA Womens High Waist Midi Skirt with Pockets
Fashion Trend #17: Shackets
While we are seeing a lot of button-down style tops as well, this shirt jacket is definitely the most popular.
It’s literally exactly how it sounds. A button-down shirt that’s often a little thicker and looser so it works as a jacket.
This is a great layering piece going into fall and would also be a great completer piece for those warmer climates where you really don’t need a true jacket during the cooler months of the year! \
- Soft-Brushed Utility Shacket for Women
- Women’s Brushed Shacket – Universal Thread
- Plaid Soft-Brushed Utility Shacket for Women
- Women’s Cropped Faux Leather Shacket
Fall & Winter 2022/2023 Fashion Trends:
SHOES & ACCESSORIES
Fashion Trend #18: Compact Crossbodies
Bear with me here. I still cringe a little at the word fanny pack. Ugh. Yeah, I just don’t know if I can do it.
BUT. Even though I’m not sure about the word itself, it’s hard to argue with the usefulness of a hands-free bag.
Whether you go with a true waist-tied fanny pack style or a crossbody there are a lot of options out there for a variety of tastes! And it’ll hold all your things close to you without tying up your hands.
- Addison Crossbody Bag – Universal Thread

- Saddle Crossbody Bag – A New Day
- Cayden Crossbody Bag – Universal Thread
- Fanny Pack – Wild Fable
Fashion Trend #19: Felt Hats
In the last year or so I’ve really fallen in love with a good baseball cap.
My hair is long and I tire of ponytails quickly, so hats allow me to keep my hair down and not have to stress too much with how perfect the top of my hair looks on day 2 or 3 (or 4😆) hair.
This being the case, I am very tempted to get a felt hat in a good neutral to “dress up” my hat game!
There are floppy hats and fedora style hats in great number in stores this fall!
- Women’s Wide Brim Felt Fedora Hat – Universal Thread
- Lanzom Women Retro Felt Wool Wide Brim Hat

You will see this style of boot with platform soles (90s come-back trend) or regular soles, and in lots of colors and toe shapes (square, pointy, round, etc).
You will also find styles that are super casual like rainboots all the way up to dressy patent leather!

Claw clips are also very popular and very easy to use!
Snap clips and wide headbands are fun ways to add a simple pop of color to your hair.
