If you are a busy mom with an acute sense of style then you surely value originality more than anything else. This is exactly why making your own accessories is so much more rewarding than getting them from the mall or ordering online.
You have the opportunity to mix and match colors, textures and actually make something to your liking. Besides, If you are lucky enough to have girls, then you can turn this into a fun activity for them as well!
So here are the five easy steps in making a great crocheted necklace similar to the ones pictured below!
Step 1: Tools and supplies
When it comes to crocheting there really isn’t much you can do without the appropriate tools or supplies. If you are an avid crocheter then these should be familiar. If not, you can always improvise. In order to make a crocheted necklace you will need:
- beads (various colors, various sizes and textures, it’s all up to you)
- crochet thread
- a crochet hook
- a clip
- two lobster hooks
You might not actually use all of these, but it’s better to be safe than sorry and have everything handy.
Step 2: Put the beads on a thread
The first thing you need to do after you have all your tools ready is string the beads you will be working with.
You can do this with the help of a beading tool, or by hand if they are big enough.
Just make sure that you have plenty of beads on the thread, make sure you alternate colors or sizes and that it has somewhat of a pleasant pattern.
Step 3: Crochet the strand
Now, there are two ways of going about it.
- You can either make one single strand, and have the final result be a thin necklace (which I actually suggest if this is your first time)
- or you can make multiple strands and then braid them into a thicker, fuller necklace.
You can actually try both versions and see which one of them fits you best. Of course, you will also be needing to take into account the type of thread and beads that you are using and if their size is suitable for a single or for multiple strands.
So in order to make a thread you simply need to alternate stitches with beads until you reach the desired length. For instance, you can chain ten and then add a bead, after which you can chain five and add a bead, after which you can chain seven and add another bead and so on.
The important thing is to chain around ten stitches or more at the end of the thread.
Step 4: Braid
If you have gone with the multiple threads version of the crocheted necklace, once all there threads are done, all you have to do is braid them.
Just tie the threads in a knot, start braiding and tie another knot right at the end.
When this is done all you have to do is add the lobster hook to the end of the necklace.
Use the pliers to clamp it down. However, if you want to be extra sure that it will hold you can also use glue or, even better, super glue. Just make sure you don’t overdo it because some synthetic threads tend to melt down if the glue is too strong.
Step 5: Accessorize
Now that you have a new crocheted necklace, make sure you have something nice to wear it with.
There are plenty of patterns available online that you can try out for even more original pieces in your wardrobe. Better yet, you can look for other accessories you could make yourself, such as earrings, belts and even bracelets that can go with your new necklace.
The bottom line is that you can almost never go wrong with a crocheted necklace. It’s one of those things that is so easy to make that you can actually find pleasure in working on the project itself and not only in the finished item.
One of the great things about crocheted necklaces apart from the fact that they are original and easy to make is the fact that they make for great presents and are ready in the blink of an eye.
So if you’re ever busy enough to forget about your best friend’s birthday, all you need is a half an hour and you can make her the ideal present!
